Some dorm rooms are dull enough to put coffee to sleep. You walk in and see one roommate staring at a book on microorganisms—he’s the one majoring in cellular biology at the college. The other roommate is slumped over his desk, snoring away in front of his computer. You walk a few rooms down the hall and find the opposite end of the spectrum. Actually, you hear it before you see it—this room definitely has a sound system with a subwoofer. You open the door to find the source of the loud music blasting away as one roommate practices his dancing moves. The other two are tackling each other to try to get a Nerf ball away. Not much studying getting done here.
Beat Dorm Boredom Before it Beats You!
OK, so everyone likes to remind you that you go to college to study, not to party. But sometimes, you just have to take a break from those piles of textbooks. After all, if you go to college in Hawaii, you can’t just stay in your room the entire weekend and not run over to the beach that’s not very far away. So maybe you’re not in Hawaii—maybe you’re attending a university in Missouri. But you can still find ways to have fun wherever you are.
Video game tournaments are always a classic way for college guys to kick back and relax. You know the video gamers’ rooms by the loud explosions, beeps, and other noises that you hear coming from the rooms when you walk by. Not to mention the occasional cheers of victory. A lot of people bring their Xbox’s and Wiis to school just to make sure they don’t become too dull and boring from all that studying.
Most colleges offer areas for recreation. You don’t have to be majoring in physical education to go out and get some exercise. You can hit a few tennis balls on the courts, shoot some hoops, or hit a few baseballs. Or maybe you just want to run a few laps—most schools have a track where you can run.
And there are always the original games you can come up with in a dorm room. I remember one guy who lived next door to me developing a game that involved leaning a mattress up against a door, running full speed into it, and falling backward. Also, Nerf guns or even just rubber bands can provide extensive entertainment and a chance to shoot that annoying roommate—the physics major who wants to analyze the angle and speed of the rubber band and finds it hitting him before he can get out of the way.
When you need to take a break at school, be creative and bring a few friends along. Who knows, you might even come up with the next extreme sport from your third floor window. Not that I’m suggesting any wild ideas…
If you’ve got some zany and crazy ways (actual or imagined) to crush dorm & academic boredom, leave a comment. I’m all ears :) Maybe I’ll share it with my roomie.

Once after Thanksgiving, we had a bunch of cooked creamed squash (nasty stuff) left over so I filled up my roommate’s shampoo bottle with some of the squash and snuck it in the shower. Man, did we have a laugh when he squirted it to wash his hair!
Man, we used to grab all the mattresses off the bunkbeds and surf down the stairs in our dorm.
Mattress surfing! That sounds like a winner :) Count me in on that one next time you’re fighting boredom.
