by Lucas

College. What do you think when you hear that word? Studying piles of books and notes late into the night? Listening to long boring lectures on topics you care nothing about? Partying and playing games with friends? Playing sports, either intramural or intermural? For different people, thinking of college can stir up very different images in the mind. One person may think of long tedious homework, while another person may think of hanging out with friends, and another person may think about playing sports and experiencing the thrill of competition. Some people just can’t be away from the basketball court for long.

Get involved in college sports

Just about any college, no matter how small, offers some sort of sports opportunities. You don’t have to give up your love for kicking a soccer ball in order to study all the time. You could be at a large university in California or on a small campus in Nebraska and still find the chance to play your favorite sport. However, colleges have different programs depending on their size and their level of involvement in inter-mural competition. Some just have teams within the college that compete against each other. Others have teams that compete on an NCAA level with colleges around the country.

If you enjoy athletic activities, you will probably find some sort of chance to get involved in any college you attend. However, if you played in high school and developed a sufficient level of skill, you may want to consider finding a college that competes against other schools. Read about the college online and talk to people who may have gone there. Find out if they have good coaches and are strong in your specific sport. A college may win every football game it plays but do horribly at basketball. Keep up with how well a certain school does in competing against other schools.

If you enjoy playing volleyball but aren’t excessively good at it, you may want to find a school that has teams that compete against each other within the college on an intramural level. You might not get picked to be the center on a varsity team, but you still could have fun playing against other times within the school itself. If you really enjoy sports you might consider a major in physical education or at least some classes in that field.

Most people who attend college don’t find themselves holed up in front of books for their entire time in school. They find chances to get out, to exercise, and to play sports. Sure, you might choose a university in Virginia that is near the beach or a college in Colorado that is near the mountains. But if you’re a sports fan, don’t ignore that element when considering schools.
