You could certainly gain an advantage by earning a college degree in business before entering a career in this competitive society. In fact, if you go on to obtain an MBA from a respected college, you automatically have a better chance of getting a decent job. You can go a lot of directions with a business degree—anything from managing a retail store to overseeing a paper company, from selling cell phones to managing a web marketing company.

Interested in Going to College for a Degree in Business Related Studies?

Many business faculty at colleges have worked in corporate positions and learned from both mistakes and successes. They’re now willing to share their knowledge with students. They can set up imaginary marketing scenarios in which students can think about how they might market the next great brand of specialty coffees. Some people go into rewarding jobs without a college degree, but most successful business people have at least some sort of liberal arts degree.

Like any career field, you can’t really know for sure if it’s for you until you’ve experienced a little bit for yourself. You may have to take a few classes in management and marketing to understand the gist of what you would learn in a related major. However, you can find out information ahead of time by reading information from colleges, talking with professors, and even talking with people you know in successful business-related positions.

Look at business degrees at several different colleges. Don’t just limit yourself to those nearby—you could examine universities from Virginia to California and maybe find one on the other side of the country that has an excellent program you’d like to be a part of. Write to the admissions departments or call the colleges to find out everything you can. You might even want to visit to experience a few classes and see what life is like around the college. Also, consider the factors important to you in a college. Maybe you play badminton every day and would like to be on an intercollegiate badminton team. You probably won’t find that at every college.

The business field is broad, and so colleges have many majors that fit into that category. Common majors include Business Management, Marketing, International Business, Business Technology, and many more. Think about your specific skills and interests. Maybe you have skills with computers and equipment and would enjoy working in the technology end of things. Or maybe you grew up selling wagon loads of gum and are excellent at marketing any idea or product. The possibilities are endless!
