Become a Graphic Designer or Multimedia Specialist

Graphic Designers use their artistic and creative abilities to design in print or electronic formats to meets the needs of their clients. Graphics designers are responsible for the visual and aesthetic quality of everything from websites to product packaging. Designers must have the ability to find creative solutions for projects with limits in time, budget and scope and have to consider many factors in the planning and implementing of their designs. Graphic designers work with computer software such as InDesign, Quark XPress, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and other design tools to develop the overall production design and layout of finished publications. Graphic Design encompasses a variety of different fields and specialties, so many designers choose to focus on one field, whether its web design, product or packaging design, object arrangement or material use.

Training and Education

An Associates Degree in Art or a related field can help you get started in the field, although many art schools as well as 4 year universities offer Bachelors of Fine Arts Degrees (BFA) in Graphic Design. The terminal degree in this field is the MFA or Masters of Fine Arts.
