Alabama Job Outlook

In Alabama, there are currently over 58 universities and colleges across the state. The largest single-location institution is the University of Alabama with around 28,000 undergraduates at its Tuscaloosa campus. Troy University boasts an enrollment of 29,000 students across four separate campuses in Alabama. There are 14 public universities in the state’s higher education programs with numerous other two-year community colleges. Private undergraduate and graduate universities account for 17 of the state’s institutions. Alabama universities are accredited by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges with a handful of exceptions and, while there are only two medical schools in the state, several prestigious ABA-accredited law schools are located in Alabama.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has been an important driving force of the state’s economy. UAB is the largest employer in the state with a workforce of over 20,000 and has transformed the Birmingham economy by introducing technological innovation and medical research to the area. The UAB hospital is the only Level I Trauma Center in Alabama, and the presence of the university and hospital has attracted several healthcare providers to establish their headquarters in Birmingham, the state’s largest city.

The state has struggled over time in making advancements in higher education; however, with recent investments in healthcare services, banking, and information technology, Alabama has begun to diversify its heavily industrial-based economy. This has led to new demand for workers with college degrees. Currently only about 1 in 5 Alabama residents have a degree, but the number of college-educated residents is expected to increase in the coming years.
