Arizona Job Outlook
Higher education in Arizona is uniquely diverse, with colleges and universities across the state providing a range of options for current or potential students. The state’s public university system is comprised of three institutions: Northern Arizona State University, the University of Arizona, and Arizona State University. These schools are overseen by the Arizona Board of Regents, which functions as the governing body of the universities and their numerous campuses.
In the area of private education, for-profit or “chain” universities are the overwhelmingly predominant force in Arizona; there exists only one traditional, not-for-profit, four-year private school in the state. Small community colleges and two-year vocational or technical schools are also very prevalent – in Maricopa County alone, there are eleven separate community colleges. These community colleges are largely overseen and governed locally by administrators on campus, allowing the development of education programs that teach skills relevant to the local economy.
Arizona State University is the largest public research university in the United States. Its enrollment in 2009 was over 68,000 students spanning across four campuses, with the Tempe campus being the largest.
