Florida Job Outlook
Eleven public colleges and universities, in addition to numerous community and state colleges, comprise the State University System of Florida, the largest provider of higher education in the state with over 300,000 students enrolled throughout the state. This system also employs about 45,000 Floridians and operates with an annual budget of $4.1 billion, making it an influential economic force in the state.
Private colleges and universities far outnumber public state universities in Florida, although the total enrollment of the private schools falls short of that of the public system. Florida is also home to many private religiously-affiliated universities of various denominations. Trade and technical schools are also an important source of education for training students to compete in the workforce.
The largest university in the state is the University of Florida in Gainesville, with 51,000 graduates and undergraduates and a $1.25 billion endowment. UF is also one of the most exclusive Florida colleges or universities, with a 2009 acceptance rate of 37% of applicants. Other large public schools include Florida International University in Miami, the University of Central Florida in Orlando, and the University of South Florida in Tampa. These schools are nationally-known and attract large numbers of out-of-state applicants each year.
