Hawaii Job Outlook

The state of Hawaii has a diverse population of college and university students across the state’s islands. The largest higher education provider is the University of Hawaii System, which has an enrollment of just over 50,000 students, of which about 45,000 are undergraduates. This system offers 616 programs for bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and associate’s degrees on six of the Hawaiian islands via community colleges, full-scale campuses, research facilities, colleges, and professional schools.

The economy of Hawaii is heavily dependent on the tourism industry, and many native students either enter the workforce immediately or pursue education on the mainland. However, there are several private institutions to be found on the islands, including Hawaii Pacific University, Honolulu University, and others. A few for-profit universities also call the islands home.

Since tourism is such a large part of the economy, most of the Hawaiian workforce are employed in the service sector, and community colleges and trade schools offer job-specific training to prepare students for their careers.
