Iowa Job Outlook
The state of Iowa boasts a diversified economy with advanced industries, despite its reputation as a farm state. Agriculture does contribute significantly to Iowa’s economic activity, but sectors such as finance, insurance services, biotechnology, and manufacturing are the areas experiencing the most rapid growth. This diversity in the state’s economy has seen Iowa weather the current economic downturn substantially easier than most of the rest of the nation, with an unemployment rate far below the national average.
Public colleges and universities in Iowa are overseen by a group of nine volunteers known as the Iowa Board of Regents. These governor-appointed officials engage in policymaking and coordination between the network of state-sponsored institutions. Three higher education institutions are state-sponsored: Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa. Of these, the University of Iowa is the largest, with an enrollment of about 30,000 undergraduates. Iowa State University is known for its high level of research activity and is located in Ames, Iowa.
Several dozen private colleges and universities are also present in the state, including the University of Dubuque, Des Moines University, and a number of religiously-affiliated schools.
