The public higher education system of the state of Kansas is governed by the Kansas Board of Regents, who oversee six public universities, nineteen community colleges, twelve technical schools and colleges, and one municipal university. The state supported universities are Emporia State, Fort Hays State, Kansas State, Pittsburg State, and Wichita State Univerisites, as well as the University of Kansas.

30,000 undergraduates attend the University of Kansas, making the school the largest in the state. The university operates across three campuses in Kansas and is frequently one of the most popular universities in the United States.

Kansas has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, with 6.4% of Kansans out of work. The economy of Kansas is the 32nd largest in the nation and heavily focused on agricultural exports. What industry there is in the state consists mostly of the production of heavy machinery, transportation equipment, and aircraft-related manufacturing.

Several large corporations are headquartered in Kansas, such as Sprint Nextel, Embarq, Payless Shoes, and Koch Industries. The largest city in the state is Wichita, with a population of about 365,000.
