Maine Job Outlook
As of June 2010, the unemployment rate in the state of Maine has been slightly lower than the national average, with the number of out-of-work Maine residents at 7.7% and falling. Maine’s economy is largely driven by its large source of natural resources, such as timber, lobster, blueberries, and more. The industrial sector of the state’s economy is built around the manufacture of goods using the state’s resources, including toothpicks, paper, leather products, and food products. Tourism and recreational activities are also a staple of Maine’s economic activity, due to the state’s unique landscapes, forests, coastlines, and mountain ranges.
Colleges and universities in the state of Maine are mostly found in and around the most densely-populated areas, including Portland, Brunswick, Bangor, and Lewiston. The largest university is the University of Maine in Orono, Maine, and is the flagship university of the University of Maine System. 12,000 students are enrolled at the main campus, with another 24,000 attending one of nine branch campuses scattered in various cities. UMaine is the only university in the state classified as a research university.
In addition to the university system, the Community College System is supported and overseen by the state. These schools offer 2-year degrees at eight separate colleges located in places such as Kennebec Valley and Central Maine.
