Maryland Job Outlook

According to a 2009 report from the U.S. Census Bureau, residents of Maryland enjoy the highest median household income in the country at $69,272, and in January 2010, the state’s unemployment rate was calculated to be 7.5%—well below the national average.

Maryland’s economic activity is largely driven by it’s coastal location with a thriving transportation industry centered around the Port of Baltimore. 25% of Maryland’s labor force is made up of white collar technical and administrative workers, which is the result of Maryland’s close proximity to the nation’s Capital in Washington, DC. Besides from U.S. Government satellite headquarters, other large employers in Maryland are the aerospace and defense industry, and bio-research laboratories such as Johns Hopkins University and it’s hospital and medical research facilities. Maryland is also known for food production as the Chesapeake Bay is a prime location for commercial fishermen.

Maryland is home to many prestigious colleges and universities. The most prominent private school is Johns Hopkins University, although there are several other renowned private institutions such as Loyola University Maryland and Mount St. Mary’s University. Public universities in Maryland include the University of Maryland, Baltimore, University of Maryland, College Park, and Towson University among others. There are also two federally funded institutions in Maryland; the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and the United States Naval Academy.
