Missouri Job Outlook

The midwestern state of Missouri generally mirrors the makeup of the United States as a whole in terms of demographics, politics, and economics and is comprised of both rural and urban areas. It is the 18th most populous state in the nation and is ranked 26th in terms of per capita personal income. Its major economic sectors cover a broad range and include transportation equipment, aerospace, agriculture, printing/ publishing, mining, and even beer.

This wide array of economic contributors is reflected in Missouri’s educational opportunities. Missouri is home to numerous institutions, including 67 colleges and universities. The University of Missouri System is the state’s public university system, which includes the state’s most noteworthy institution, the University of Missouri in Columbia. The University of Missouri in Columbia is the largest university in Missouri, enrolling over 32,000 students, and was also the first public institution of higher education west of the Mississippi River. The school offers over 270 degree programs through 20 schools and colleges.

Also included in the University of Missouri System are three other universities (Missouri University of Science and Technology, University of Missouri- Kansas City, and University of Missouri- St. Louis), a publishing press, a healthcare system, and five research and technology parks.

Missouri boasts a total of 13 public universities, 39 private colleges, and 13 community colleges. The state’s private institutions include such colleges as Westminster College, Lindenwood University, College of the Ozarks, and Saint Louis University, among others.
