Montana Job Outlook
Although traditionally centered around cattle ranching, Montana has evolved into a state whose economy includes a wide range of industry and service. Natural tourism is a valuable component of the state’s economy, as the state is home to both Glacier National Park and three of the five entrances to Yellowstone National Park, one of the nation’s most visited parks. Lumber and mining are also central industries, and Montana’s evolving microbrewing industry has catapulted the state into third place in terms of craft breweries per capita.
The state’s ranking of 44th in terms of population is reflected in its relatively short list of colleges and universities, but for such a small crowd, the institutions are extremely diverse in scope. The Montana State University System is comprised of four public universities, and its main campus is Montana State University- Bozeman, a university with over 13,500 students. Not to be confused with the Montana State University System, the University of Montana System also contains four schools, the largest of which is the University of Montana- Missoula, the system’s flagship campus.
Montana is also home to three community colleges, Dawson Community College, Flathead Valley Community College, and Miles Community College. There are also several tribal colleges, which are institutions designed specifically for residents of Montana’s American Indian reservations and the surrounding communities.
Finally, Montana’s educational opportunities also include three private institutions. Carroll College and University of Great Falls are both Catholic schools, and Rocky Mountain College is a small, private liberal arts school.
