Nebraska Job Outlook
Nebraska is a midwestern state whose average-sized economy is powered mostly by agricultural sectors, including the production of soybeans, corn, pork, and beef. Manufacturing, freight transport, telecommunications, and information technology are also important components, but the state’s economy is certainly not limited to only these sectors. For example, in the city of Hastings the second week of every August is named Kool-Aid Days in celebration of the 1927 invention of what would later become Nebraska’s official soft drink.
Educational opportunities in Nebraska are many, with two public education systems and numerous private institutions. The largest university in the state is University of Nebraska- Lincoln, the flagship campus of the University of Nebraska System, which includes two other campuses located in the cities of Kearney and Omaha. The Nebraska State College System includes three public institutions as well, all of which are relatively small compared to the schools in the University of Nebraska System.
Private institutions are even more common throughout the state, with over twice as many private four-year choices being offered than public. There are over a dozen different private schools, many of which share in Nebraska’s long Christian tradition.
Additionally, Nebraska is home to several community colleges and even tribal colleges for residents of American Indian reservations and their surrounding communities.
