New Mexico Job Outlook

New Mexico’s modest economy is fueled by tourism, oil and gas production, and federal government spending. The state has 35 state parks which attract over 4.5 million visitors a year, and it ranks 3rd in the nation in terms of crude oil and gas production. The main driver of the economy, however, is government spending. In an effort to promote economic growth, the federal government spends over $2.00 for every one dollar received in tax revenue.

New Mexico has a wide range of colleges and universities for both four-year and two-year prospective students. The largest school in the state is the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, which enrolls around 35,000 students. There is also a diverse list of smaller public institutions including Western New Mexico University in Silver city and Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, among others.

New Mexico also has a number of private four-year schools, many of which are liberal arts colleges. These include schools such as University of the Southwest in Hobbs. There are many private art institutes such as the Santa Fe University of Art and Design, and nationwide schools such as ITT Technical Institute also have campuses in New Mexico.
