New York Job Outlook
New York is home to a great many colleges and universities serving both two-year and four-year students. Arguably the most famous of these institutions is New York University (NYU), a private research university based in the hub of the state, New York City. NYU is organized into 18 schools, institutes, and colleges, spread throughout six centers across the city and the world. NYU is the largest private nonprofit provider of higher education in the entire country.
New York is also home to a remarkable public university system. The State University System of New York (SUNY) is the largest system of colleges, universities, and community colleges in the entire world, and over 465,000 traditional students are enrolled in SUNY, as well as 1.1 million adult education students. SUNY spans 64 campuses across the state of New York, and it contains all institutions of higher education in New York that are funded by the state, with the exception of the schools that are part of New York City’s separate university system (City University of New York, or CUNY), which are funded by the city itself.
These secondary education institutions groom the residents of New York for the type of jobs typical in the state’s healthy economy, and New York’s economy ranks third in the nation, behind only Texas and California, two of the country’s largest states. The state of New York is fueled by New York City, and if New York City were an independent nation, its economy would be the 16th largest in the world. The city is the country’s leading location for finance, communication, and banking, as well as stock exchange, with the New York Stock Exchange claiming the title as the largest stock exchange in the world. Finally, New York City is also home to many of the world’ largest corporations.
