North Dakota Job Outlook

North Dakota is home to many opportunities for two-year and four-year students. The public schools in the state are run by the North Dakota University System, which includes a total of 11 campuses. These campuses include five community colleges, four regional universities, and two research institutions. The largest university in the system, as well as the state, is North Dakota State University of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (NDSU), which has a student body of about 14,000. In addition to the university system and several private colleges, North Dakota is also home to five tribal colleges serving Native American reservations and their surrounding communities.

These educational institutions help prepare students for work in North Dakota’s modest economy. The state’s main industry is agriculture, with about 90% of the land in North Dakota having farms. North Dakota farms many of the nation’s cereal grains, including barley, oats, wheat, and corn. North Dakota is also a major energy-producer, mostly from coal, and it exports some of its energy to nearby states. Therefore, college graduates looking to become employed in North Dakota can usually expect to acquire a job in either the agriculture or energy industry.
