Oklahoma Job Outlook

Oklahoma’s higher education opportunities are numerous. There are dozens of public education opportunities, but the largest schools are part of the Oklahoma State University System. The Oklahoma State University System is comprised of six campuses (four general academic institutions and two health institutions) across the state. The largest school in the Oklahoma State University System is Oklahoma State University- Stillwater, with a total enrollment of over 35,000 students.

In addition to its public institutions, Oklahoma also offers a number of private schools and tribal colleges. The oldest operating college in Oklahoma is one such school. Bacone College weas founded in 1880 as Indian University and had very strong tribal affiliations, but it is no longer classified as an official tribal college. Official tribal colleges include Pawnee Nation College, Comanche Nation College, College of the Muscogee Nation, and Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribal College. The remainder of the private schools in Oklahoma have a distinct religious affiliation, and these include such institutions as Oklahoma Baptist College, Oklahoma Christian University, Phillips Theological Seminary, and Southern Nazarene University.

College graduates in Oklahoma can expect to work in one of Oklahoma’s main industries, including aviation, transportation equipment, energy, electronics, food processing, and telecommunications. Energy is extremely important to Oklahoma’s economy, as the state ranks second in the nation in terms of natural gas production. Finally, Oklahoma has been rated one of the most business-friendly states in the country, with the nation’s 7th lowest tax burden, so the state is also home to several corporations.
