Pennsylvania Job Outlook
Pennsylvania is home to the third largest selection of colleges and universities in the country, behind only the states of California and New York. The state’s post-secondary educational opportunities are comprised of both public and private two-year and four-year schools. Many of Pennsylvania’s public universities are contained within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, which is comprised of 14 state owned schools. Although these schools, which include such universities as Millersville University, West Chester University, California University, and Shippensburg University, are the only state owned schools, they are not the only schools in Pennsylvania to receive state funding, as there are also several so-called “state related” schools. These state related schools include institutions such as the state’s largest University, Pennsylvania State University (PSU). Pennsylvania State University has a total enrollment of nearly 100,000 students across its 24 campuses, with over 44,000 students alone studying at the main campus, University Park.
In addition to Pennsylvania’s public schools, there are also a number of private colleges and universities (both religious and secular liberal arts), as well as community colleges. Private institutions include such schools as Elizabethtown College, Franklin & Marshall College, Dickinson College, and Gettysburg College, among others.
Pennsylvania’s economy was historically dominated by coal and steel production, but it is now comprised mainly of service-related industries, agriculture, and trade jobs. Livestock and livestock products are an important component of Pennsylvania’s agricultural trade, and Pennsylvania is the leading producer of milk in the United States.
