Texas Job Outlook
Texas is home a very large number of post-secondary educational opportunities for prospective college students. The state contains the second largest number of colleges and universities in the nation, second only to California, so it is not surprising that Texas’s public universities are divided between no less than five separate university systems (whereas most states have need for only one or two university systems). The public university systems, which comprise all but four of Texas’s public universities are the University of North Texas System, the University of Texas System, Texas A&M University System, Texas State University System, and Texas Tech University System. The largest system in terms of enrollment is the University of Texas System with a total enrollment of over 190,000 students. The flagship institution of this system is the University of Texas at Austin, one of the state’s largest and most famous schools.
In addition to the multitude of public universities, Texas also offers dozens of private colleges and universities, as well as several community colleges. The private colleges include both religious affiliated schools and secular colleges, and there are also a number of strictly liberal arts schools. Private colleges and universities in Texas include such institutions as Texas Baptist College, Concordia University, Baylor University, Austin College, and Paul Quinn College, among many others.
Texas’s economy presents a variety of job opportunities to college graduates, as Texas’s economy is one of the largest and fastest growing in the United States. The state is the largest exporter of goods in the nation, and it also has the country’s second largest workforce. Important industries in which graduates can expect to become employed include agriculture, aeronautics, energy, healthcare, entertainment, tourism, defense, and computer technology.
